In case of emergency hospitalization, Mutas must be contacted within 48 hours to avoid any deductible.

Access Conditions

To benefit from services offered by Mutas during your vacations abroad, certain conditions must be met.

Mutual insurance contributions

  • Your mutual insurance contributions must be up-to-date at the time of your departure abroad.
  • Make sure all contributions are current before traveling.

Recreational nature of stay

  • Your stay abroad must be recreational.
  • The duration of your temporary stay abroad must not exceed three months (vacations).

        ! Professional stays are not covered.

Urgent medical care

  • Care must be urgent and provided by a recognized healthcare provider in the country of stay.
  • Care may also be provided by a locally accredited service or organization.
  • Care must comply with the regulations in force in the country of stay.

 

Advice : 

  • Before departure : Ensure your mutual insurance contributions are up-to-date.
  • During your stay : Ensure that healthcare providers consulted are recognized and accredited according to the regulations of the country of stay.
  • Documentation: Keep all documents relating to care received and providers consulted, including prescriptions. Consider photographing medication packages.

Global coverage

Child benefit recipients can travel with peace of mind thanks to Mutas' global coverage. This coverage guarantees coverage of urgent care anywhere in the world, as long as the person is in receipt of Child Benefit at the time of departure and meets the conditions for access to Mutas coverage. 

Any person concerned must be able to submit proof that he or she is a beneficiary of family allowances if his or her health insurance fund requests it.

 

Coverage on a cruise

Traveling on a cruise is a unique experience, but it's essential to know how your health coverage works on board. With Mutas, members of the Neutral Mutual Benefit from complete medical assistance even on the high seas, provided that the ship sails under the flag of a country listed among covered destinations. 

What happens if the treatment takes place in the territory where the boat is moored ? 

You will be covered as long as the territory in question is provided for by Mutas' eligibility requirements

Exclusions :

  • There is no intervention in countries or regions where it is known before departure that the medically necessary infrastructure is absent or is only present at a very distant distance.
Transport*
  • Medical repatriation to Belgium
  • Primary patient transport (from accident site or treatment site)
  • Secondary patient transport (for continuity of care) 
  • In the event of an accident on the ski slopes, the cost of sleigh transport

Exclusions : 

  • In the event of a skiing accident, research costs are excluded. 
  • Non-medical emergency repatriations. 
  • When the member organizes his or her own repatriation. 
  • Travel expenses due to inpatient visits are not reimbursable
In the event of death abroad*
  • Moving a family member to the place of death of the insured
  • Repatriation of the deceased to Belgium 
  • Fees for the use of the funeral mortuary that Mutas used

Exclusions : 

  • Burial and cremation costs abroad are not covered. 
  • No intervention for the repatriation of the urn. 
Other*
  • Telephone charges for calls made to Mutas  
  • Accommodation costs for the accompanying person when the patient is still hospitalised after the end date of the stay 

Exclusions : 

  • Meals and personal expenses are not reimbursed

Study abroad

The Neutral Mutualities offer medical assistance for students who are pursuing their studies within the EEA + CH. With this service, students can focus on their studies with peace of mind, knowing that they have reliable health coverage for their urgent care.

Conditions of access

To benefit from this assistance, students must meet the following conditions :

  • Receiving child benefit : Students must be in receipt of child benefit from the Belgian social security system and must be able to provide proof of this allowance if the health insurance fund requests it.
  • Certificate issued by an accredited institution abroad : Present a certificate issued by an accredited institution in the country of study before or on the date of departure.

Destinations covered

Students are covered if they are studying in one of the following countries :

Duration and renewal of coverage

  • Coverage extends to a full academic year.
  • Coverage is renewable each year, subject to the validation of the conditions of access.

Coverage during internships
Internships carried out as part of the studies are also covered, provided that the same conditions of access mentioned for the studies are met.

Exclusions



While we are committed to providing comprehensive and reliable medical assistance during your travels, certain situations and conditions are not covered.

Service is excluded in the following situations :

  • When it is not a recreational stay (e.g. travel for professional reasons)
  • When the Federal Public Service for Foreign Affairs has issued a negative opinion for the trip at the time of departure
  • When the travel advice of the Institute of Tropical Medicine is not respected (e.g. get vaccinated before departure)

Below is a non-exhaustive list of exclusions that will not allow you to benefit from an intervention.

Dangerous Sport
  • The exercise of a sport or leisure activity that is accompanied by an increase in risk. Similarly, any activity for which the organiser has the participants sign a document exonerating them from liability is excluded.  
  • The exercise of a remunerated sport, participation in a match or demonstration for which an entry fee is charged and for which the participants receive remuneration in any form whatsoever, preparation and training in connection with these matches or demonstrations are comparable; 



Consult article 34 of the statutes of the Union of Neutral Mutualities for more information on excluded sports. 

Predictable Care
  • Benefits following a condition that existed at the outset for which treatment is in progress;  
  • Foreseeable medical care that is due to a physical or mental condition that already exists at the time of departure;  
  • Pregnancy or childbirth from the 26th week of pregnancy unless clear and unforeseeable complications occur;  
  • The services necessary to ensure the continuity of medical care;  
  • Benefits related to a pre-departure accident  
Specific care
  • The costs of treatment in psychiatric institutions;  
  • Vaccination costs, except tetanus in case of injury;  
  • Any delivery of eyesglasses, contact lenses, optical prostheses, both the first delivery and the replacement or change and other prostheses of the eye;  
  • Hearing aids, dentures;  
  • Medication or medical supplies when there is no prescription abroad from the provider who is authorized to prescribe the medication or medical supplies;  
  • When compulsory insurance in Belgium or abroad does not provide for intervention in the care provided, such as in the case of :  
    • Convalescence treatments ;  
    • Thermal cures ; 
    • Weight loss treatment ; 
    • Beauty treatment (aesthetics and rejuvenation) ; 
    • Homeopathy ;  
    • Acupuncture ;
Voluntary risk-taking
  • Benefits arising from serious misconduct committed by the beneficiary ;  
  • Benefits resulting from acts of war ;  
  • Benefits arising as a result of riots, civil disturbances, or any acts of collective violence of political, ideological or social inspiration, except for proof to be provided by the beneficiary that the insured person did not take an active and voluntary part in these events ;  
  • Benefits resulting from accidents or illnesses occurring when the insured is under the influence of narcotics, as referred to in the Royal Decree of 31 December 1930 regulating soporific and narcotic substances and relating to risk reduction and therapeutic advice ;  
  • Benefits resulting from voluntary participation in a crime ;  
  • Benefits resulting from a voluntary risk-taking by the insured ;  
  • Benefits resulting from drunkenness or alcohol intoxication ;
